Wedding planner and stylist Sandra Scharlach carefully crafts occasions embroidered with the unique love and personalities of her couples. We chatted to Sandra about why she loves a chic city wedding, as she gave us detailed insights and tips on what couples should consider when beginning to plan their special day.

For those not familiar with your work, can you tell us a bit about you?

Hi! I’m Sandra, the creative force behind Infusion Weddings. I am based in Dublin and work all over Ireland. My journey into the world of weddings started from a deep love for storytelling and design. I’ve always been fascinated by the way events can bring people together and create lasting memories.

For me, a wedding is more than just a celebration; it’s a reflection of who you are as a couple. That’s why I focus on making each wedding as unique as the love story behind it. Whether it’s weaving cultural elements, crafting intimate details, or designing unforgettable spaces, my goal is to infuse your personality into every aspect of your big day. I find inspiration in everything from art and nature to modern design trends, but what really drives me is the happiness I see in couples when their vision comes to life in ways they had never imagined. Helping to create those moments is what I’m most passionate about.

Can you describe your aesthetic in three words?

Contemporary, bespoke, and refined.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part is getting to know my couples on a personal level. Every couple has their own unique dynamic, story, and set of values, and discovering those nuances is such a rewarding experience for me. It’s in those conversations – learning about their shared dreams, quirks, and what makes their relationship special – that I find the inspiration to create a wedding that’s truly reflective of them. Building that personal connection helps me design something that feels authentic, and it’s what makes every wedding so memorable and unique.

Why do you enjoy planning urban/city weddings?

I love planning urban weddings because there’s an energy and vibrancy in the city that’s unlike anywhere else. The architecture, the skyline, and the modern backdrop all lend themselves to creating a chic, sophisticated atmosphere that feels fresh and exciting.

I enjoy the challenge of transforming urban spaces – whether it’s a sleek rooftop, a stylish industrial venue, or a hidden city gem – into something truly personal and reflective of the couple’s vision. Dublin has so many stylish hotel and event spaces, like The Leinster, which are not just vibey but also offer culinary experiences.

For couples, what are the benefits of having a chic city centre wedding?

Convenience and accessibility are a huge advantage. Cities are typically well-connected, making it easy for guests to travel. With a variety of hotels, restaurants, and transport options nearby, your guests can enjoy the celebrations without the hassle of long-distance travel.

Also, there are so many diverse venue options. Urban areas offer a range of chic venues, from elegant hotels and stylish rooftops to historic buildings and contemporary spaces. This diversity allows you to choose a setting that perfectly aligns with your vision.

City centres also provide stunning backdrops. Whether it’s the modern architecture, vibrant street art, or historic landmarks, urban settings offer countless picturesque locations for wedding photos. Urban spaces are adorned with cultural enrichment. A city will often have a rich cultural scene, providing opportunities to incorporate local traditions or entertainment into your wedding. This adds a unique and personal touch to your celebration.

Of course, there’s the countless culinary experiences. Cities often have a thriving food scene, allowing you to curate a menu that showcases local cuisine. City weddings establish an authentic, vibrant atmosphere that captures the energy and excitement of urban life. There’s a mix of modern and traditional elements, which creates a dynamic ambiance – making your celebration both lively and memorable.

Why do you think couples should choose Dublin in particular?

A Dublin city centre wedding comes with a host of incredible benefits. First and foremost, the city offers unparalleled convenience for guests, with its abundance of hotels, charming restaurants, and transport options like the LUAS, buses, and taxis, all within easy reach. Dublin’s compact city layout makes it ideal for guests to explore or enjoy the celebrations without the hassle of long-distance travel.

Dublin’s city centre also boasts stunning and diverse wedding venues. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless elegance of historic landmarks like Dublin City Hall or the modern, sophisticated vibe of stylish hotels like The Mayson and The Leinster and rooftop bars, the city offers something for every taste. Picture your wedding photos set against the vibrant backdrop of Georgian architecture, the River Liffey, or even the iconic Ha’penny Bridge – Dublin provides endless picturesque settings that capture its charm.

Another advantage is the wealth of local talent. Dublin is home to some of the best florists, caterers, and photographers in the country, making it easy to find top-tier vendors to bring your wedding vision to life. For those who love the mix of modern city life with hints of tradition, Dublin effortlessly blends its historic roots with contemporary culture, giving your wedding a unique edge.

For couples who want a wedding with cosmopolitan flair, but with all the warmth and charm that Dublin has to offer, the city centre is the perfect choice.

How do you approach the initial stages of planning a wedding?

In the initial stages of wedding planning, I focus on building a strong foundation through open communication. Here’s how I approach it:

Firstly, I spend time getting to know the couple. This begins with a consultation to understand their story, preferences, and vision for their wedding. It’s then important to look at establishing a budget. Together, we set a realistic budget that reflects their priorities. The third step is to create a timeline. I outline the planning process with a clear timeline, highlighting key milestones to keep everything organised. I then discuss identifying the couple’s priorities. I guide couples in pinpointing their top priorities, whether it’s the venue, catering, or entertainment.

Next is venue selection. We explore venue options together that align with their vision and budget. Following this, I look at building a vendor team. I provide recommendations for trusted vendors that match their style and budget. It’s then time to start setting the tone. We define the overall aesthetic and theme, incorporating unique touches that reflect their personality.

Where do you suggest couples look for inspiration for a Dublin city wedding?

I suggest starting with some research by exploring wedding blogs and magazines. Websites like One Fab Day, Green Wedding Shoes, and Dublin Wedding Magazine showcase real weddings and styled shoots, providing plenty of ideas and trends. Social media platforms are also great tools. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are fantastic for visual inspiration. Couples can search for hashtags like #DublinWedding or #CityWedding to find local vendors and real wedding stories.

Wedding shows held throughout the year are another excellent resource. These are well worth a visit for inspiration. Attending bridal fairs and wedding expos in Dublin allows couples to meet vendors, see displays, and gather ideas from various styles and themes.

During your social media searches, you’ll find different venues you like. Book some visits to local venues. Exploring potential wedding venues in Dublin can spark inspiration. Many venues have galleries of past weddings that showcase different styles and setups. Engage with different wedding planners to find someone who matches your style. Consulting with local wedding planners can provide tailored ideas based on their experience with previous Dublin city weddings.

Lastly, embrace Dublin’s art, culture, and natural beauty for inspiration. Dublin’s rich cultural scene, including museums, galleries, and historic sites, can inspire design elements, color palettes, and themes that reflect the city’s character. Take time to discover Dublin’s nature and urban landscapes. Exploring Dublin’s parks, gardens, and urban landscapes can inspire ideas for outdoor ceremonies or beautiful backdrops for photos.

Are there any current trends emerging from the Irish wedding industry at present? Any that you love in particular?

Intimate and micro weddings are on the rise. Smaller weddings have become increasingly popular, allowing for more meaningful interactions and personalized experiences. Couples are opting for intimate ceremonies and receptions with close family and friends. More weddings are incorporating bold colour palettes. While soft pastels have traditionally been popular, many couples are now embracing bold, vibrant color palettes. Deep greens, rich burgundies, and bright jewel tones are being used to create dramatic and eye-catching designs. Unique venues are being discovered. Couples are seeking out non-traditional venues, such as urban spaces, warehouses, or outdoor locations, to add a personal touch to their celebrations. This trend allows for creativity and customization. Couples are becoming more and more innovative with their interactive guest experiences. From cocktail-making stations to personalized food carts, couples are looking to create memorable experiences for their guests. Interactive elements can make the wedding feel more engaging and fun.

What tips do you have for couples planning a city wedding in Dublin?

Focus on choosing the right venue for you. Look for venues that reflect your style and can accommodate your guest list comfortably. Consider both the aesthetic and the logistics, like parking and accessibility for guests. Be sure to plan for the weather. Dublin’s weather can be unpredictable, so have a backup plan for outdoor ceremonies or receptions. Consider venues with indoor options or provide stylish umbrellas for guests. Try to utilise urban backdrops. Take advantage of the city’s stunning architecture and vibrant streets for your wedding photos.

Think about transportation logistics. Consider the logistics of getting your guests to and from the venue, especially if there are multiple locations. Arrange shuttles or provide clear directions to minimise confusion. Incorporate local culture where you can. Infuse elements of Dublin’s culture into your wedding. This could be through traditional Irish music, local cuisine, or décor inspired by the city’s history. Always keep guest experience in mind throughout your planning. Plan activities for guests who might want to explore the city before or after the wedding. Consider providing recommendations for local attractions, restaurants, and pubs. Plan for those enjoy their late nights. Dublin’s vibrant nightlife can add an exciting element to your celebration. Most importantly, enjoy the process. City weddings can be fast-paced and bustling but remember to enjoy the journey. Take time to savour the planning process and celebrate your love story.
